Seiko has announced a trio of new and exciting models. Based on the latest generation of Prospex Speedtimer Chronographs, these new models embody the spirit of the original model from 1969, albeit offered with the latest technologies that the new Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph models now have. The three new models are all spirited timepieces, depicting the collection’s core design ethos all the while providing points of distinction and differentiation. Available now on Watch Depot.
Each of the three new Prospex Speedtimer Chronographs are powered by Seiko’s Calibre V192. This is a calibre reliant on solar energy, be it from the Sun or an artificial light. When fully charged, the Calibre V192 has a power reserve of an incredible 6-months (without being exposed to light). It features a 60-minute chronograph, a 24-hour sub-dial and a date aperture that sits between 4 and 5 o’clock. In terms of chronometry performance, the Calibre V192 has a claimed accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month at normal operating temperatures.
Let’s dive straight into the Seiko Prospex watches themselves now. First off we have the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph reference SSC911P. This model features that ever-popular panda aesthetic, with a silvery-white dial offset by three black sub-dial registers, a date aperture with a black background and red hands. The hour markers and hour/minute hands are filled with luminescent material, and the thick bezel is black and features a tachymetre scale.
The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph reference SSC911P is encased in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 41.40mm and a thickness of only 13mm. The case size is quite understated, especially considering the amount of tech that lies beneath. The bracelet matches the utilitarian look and feel of the case, while SSC911P’s sporty look is complimented by those exposed chronograph pushers and crown.
Next up is the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph reference SSC913P. The SSC913P reference features that iconic ‘Pepsi’ blue and red colourway. It has a gradient blue dial, offset like the SSC911P with black sub-dial registers and a black background date aperture. The Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph SSC913P is also highlighted by that distinct tachymetre bezel, finished in red between 60 and 250, and then blue from 250 back to 60.
And like the SSC911P, the ‘Pepsi’ inspired Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph reference SSC913P features the same case and bracelet construct and dimensions. The pops of colour give the SSC913P a more playful, sporty look that the SSC911P lacks. However, in saying that, those brighter colours reduce the SSC913P’s wearability factor significantly as you most definitely can’t pair it with a suit and tie.
Finally, we have the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph reference SSC915P. Sporting the renowned ‘Coca Cola’ colour palette, the SSC915P is dominated by that super distinct colour combination. I really like the SSC915P, more so than the ‘Pepsi’ SSC913P.
Its darker theme is offset by only the smallest pop of colour by way of those red hands and quarter-filled red tachymetre bezel. It’s a more refined, sophisticated and overall practical look that can be befitting of a more formal attire, unlike the SSC913P. The ‘Coca Cola’ colourway is one that I think looks better in totality for any watch, and the SSC915P really is no different.
All three watches bear the same fundamental look, the same attributes, the same technology and the same finishing. The obvious points of difference here are the colour options that the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph comes with. Be it the ‘Panda’, the ‘Pepsi’ or the ‘Coca Cola’, each model is significant in its execution, in its honouring of the past and in its appreciation of current technologies. Each reference is endowed with its own point of individuality, which actually brings about what looks and feels like a completely different watch. In order of preference of the new Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Chronograph timepieces are as follows: SSC911P ‘Panda’; SSC915P ‘Coca Cola’; and finally SSC913P ‘Pepsi’.
