G-Shock is on a bit of a roll, with new release after new release really hitting all the right notes. This new G-Shock is a blend of the brand’s renowned durability, coupled with the iconicity of its design and clad in the most beautiful and minutiae of details. From what looks like just your typical run-of-the-mill G-Shock is instead a feat of technical marvel that makes for one of the most stealthy and inconspicuous packages to come out of the manufacture.

The G-Shock MRG Kiwami Square is a beautiful marriage of culture, of purpose and of tradition. It features an abundance of finishings and materials that you wouldn’t really expect to see from a G-Shock watch. With materials like Ti64 titanium, COBARION® (a cobalt-chrome alloy four times harder than titanium), DAT55G (another alloy that is harder than titanium and far more workable), as well as diamond-like carbon coating. Again, this is not your average these materials have been combined to create a supreme spectacle of durability, of functionality and of life-proofness. The bezel has 25 different components, each individually polished with a multi-guard structure that incorporates flat springs and silicone buffers, enhancing shock absorption.

G-Shock’s iconic square-shaped case is the thematic look of the new MRGB5000BA-1D. It features the Ti64 super-hard titanium alloy that I mentioned before, along with that DAT55G titanium band. The bezel top is made from the COBARION® alloy, while itself and the rest of the piece has a polished sheen and diamond-like coating to enhance its deep black look, much like the first G-Shock it was inspired by.

What we can also see is the use of a deep-blue colour throughout, inspired by the same coloured ink used in Japanese calligraphy. This makes for a beautiful contrast between the mirror-polished look of the DLC case and band, and the blue highlights. This contrast is also complimented by touches of gold, a signature accent colour of the G-Shock MRG Kiwami Square, as well as that brick pattern surrounding the digital display which also fronts as the solar charging mechanism.

Like most modern G-Shocks, the MRG Kiwami Square has wonderful usability, including features like a world timer (with the ability to program 300 cities through the Casio app), a stopwatch, a calendar, five daily alarms, an LED backlight indicator, hourly time signal calibration as well as the passing hours, minutes, seconds, am/pm differentiator, month, day and date indicators

The G-Shock MRG Kiwami Square is a reflection of the brand’s capacity to consistently innovate and pioneer new technologies all the while keeping the ethos of its design culture alive.
