Today I’ll be taking you through the process of setting the time, date, and day on your Seiko 5 watch. This is a mechanical watch with a full calendar, which means setting the difference between AM and PM can be quite tricky.

This method will give you the most accurate time reading possible and will ensure that your date and day window is changing at the right time of day. Seiko 5 watches are known for their versatility and having one on hand, and in-time, makes everyday timekeeping a breeze.

Overview:

Setting The Day & Date on a Seiko 5 Watch

So, to get your settings 100% correct, you’ll need to start by setting your day and date. To do this, you’ll need to locate the crown on the side of the watch. The Seiko 5 will always have it featured at the 4 o’clock position.

Now to adjust the date and day, you’ll need to pull the crown out to one position. You can do this easily by slotting a fingernail underneath the crown at the back. Now, if the crown doesn’t come out, it’s because you have a screw-down crown used for swimming or diving. To loosen the screw-down, simply turn the crown towards you and then pull it out one position.

Just a warning, Seiko recommends that you do not change the date or day from 9:00pm to 4:00am, as it can mess with the automatic date-changing settings. In the first position, the crown will allow you to move your date function by turning the crown towards you, and the day of the week by it turning away from you.

This is an important step if you want to get your AM/PM settings right, you’ll need to adjust both day and date to one day before the present date. So if it’s currently Friday, you’ll need to set it to Thursday and if it’s the 18th, set it to the 17th. When moving the day of the week wheel, make sure to stay on the English version as the watch will not automatically correct itself if set to Japanese symbols.

Once this is set, you can move on to the time function. Wait until the seconds hand reaches the 12 o’clock position, and then pull the crown out to the 2nd position. The seconds hand should stop, and you’ll be able turn the hands away from you to forward the time.

In order to correctly set AM & PM, you’ll need to keep moving the date forward until you see the date changes to your current date. The day of the week wheel should change around the 4 o’clock position, and from there you can adjust the time until you get to your current time.

If you're setting the time for 4PM, or any PM time, you’ll need to turn the hands past 12 o’clock and into the afternoon. If you happen to go past the time you are trying to set, you can move the time back by turning the wheel towards you.

It’s best to set the minute hand one minute ahead of the current time. Once this is set, sync your watch's time up with an accurate clock, and push the button down as the clock ticks onto the next minute so that you’re precisely on time.

And that’s how you set your Seiko watch’s date, day, and time as accurately as possible. Good luck with your Seiko 5 Watch!
