We've yet to tackle a G-Shock Rangeman on our blog, so what better time than right now, with a new entry to the Master of G line available in-store. The G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400Y-1 is an adventurer’s watch, with a huge repertoire of digital features to keep you ready and informed when your tackling harsh environments.
Along with its impressive technology, this G-Shock watch has a sharp aesthetic, with some neat facet work and resin construction. If you're yet to get your hands on a Rangeman, we'll tread into the details of this iconic watch.
Overview
Rangeman GW-9400Y-1 Technology & Specifications
The Rangeman is a professional-grade digital watch, meaning you’ll get to play with high-end features like its famous Triple Sensor. This amazing technology is your compass, thermometer, and pressure reader (barometer), and it even measures altitude (altimeter). It’s a brilliant survival tool and when it comes to performance on land, few watches can compare.
You might have to check the manual a few times, but it doesn’t take long to get used to the sensor and typical G-shock functions. In terms of durability, the Rangeman is very solid, with 200-meter water resistance and shock-resistant resin construction.

Additionally, G-Shock offers its best timekeeping with Multi-Band6. This function automatically connects to transmission stations across the world for what is essentially an atomic clock reading. Unfortunately, this feature is yet to be connected to a station in Australia, but it’s a huge bonus when you’re traveling overseas.
Rangeman Size
There’s no doubt about it, this is a big watch. It measures 55.2 × 53.5mm in length and width and whopping a 18.2 mm in height. But even with the size, it’s a nice watch to handle. The buttons are responsive and non-resistant, the strap is pliable, and the case back is smooth on your wrist.
Considering the survival watch aspirations and Triple Sensor functions, I think this timepiece can be forgiven for its size. This is the kind of watch you use as a tool (even if you aren't using its full arsenal) so its
Case & Strap
Like any G-Shock, the GW9400-Y1 is full of character. This newest model comes in a vibrant black and yellow colourway, and somehow balances a professional look with clarity. While it is a bulky case, the faceting and sharpness of the bezel are super appealing.
On the case back, we get a look at the Rangeman character, set with a trusty compass. This mountain cat has been featured on every Rangeman watch since 2013, and is always a fun addition.
As for the strap, the GW-9400Y-1 comes with a fairly thin yet flexible resin band. It has a smooth feel on your wrist, and seems, on first impressions, to be very durable.
Final Thoughts
We're thrilled to have finally got our hands on this new Rangeman. When you handle this watch, it's easy to see why it's become of the most popular Master of G watches around. There were a few surprises, like the responsiveness of the pushers, that make this watch a joy to handle.
If you've been after a Rangeman for some time, this yellow and black colourway is a good entry point. Even with the bulk, it's a nice-looking watch. This series is similar to the G-Shock Mudmaster, but keep in mind you'll get the signature Triple Sensor and Tough Solar on this model.
Now, if you excuse me, I'll be planning my next trip to the middle of nowhere with my new Rangeman GW9400-Y1.
