It's time to look at the G-Shock Adventurers Gem series, recently released as part of the 40th Anniversary celebration of G-Shock. This arrival includes three signature models, the GM-2140GEM Cordierite, GM-114GEM Calcite, and GM-5640GEM Sunstone.

All three watches are limited edition and inspired by stones that adventurers have used as compasses and guideposts over centuries. To fit this theme, G-Shock has called on its watchmaking prowess to forge these unique metal G-Shock watches to perfection. Each watch also comes in its own biodegradable box, which is a great touch.

Overview:

G-Shock GM-2140GEM Cordierite

First up is the GM-2140GEM Cordierite, a flashy new take on the metal CasiOak. Like all three signature watches in the Adventurers Gem series, this watch has intricate texturing on its bezel. I think the crystal-like surface brings the colour of the blue ion-plated metal nicely, and it looks great under light.

The dial has been set with polarised vapour deposition, meaning you’ll get a different shine depending on your viewing angle. This is a super impressive design, with the

G-Shock has used a two-colour moulding technique in their resin, and the result is pleasing to the eye. I’m definitely a fan of this strap!

As for specs, this model is functionally identical to the metal CasiOaks in the GM-2100 series. Expect the full range of features like world time, a stopwatch, an alarm system, and a full calendar. Lug-to-lug comes in at 49.3mm, with 44.4mm width and 12.1mm height.

G-Shock GM-114GEM Calcite

Next up is the GM-114GEM Calcite, based on the stone that leads you to success. This is another metal case, this time with dual gold and black ion plating.

Careful heat treatment gives this GM-110 bezel fantastic texture and visual intrigue, a motif of the adventurers gem series. The dial gets the popular gold and black look too, while a smooth resin band offers a clean finish.

This is the biggest watch of the three, with a  51.9mm lug-to-lug, a 48.8 width, and a 16.9mm height. Thankfully, G-shock is used to working with this bigger round case, and the wrist-feel is comfortable.

On the clasp, we get an engraved 4 stars, representing the 40 years of G-Shock, and a since 1983 tag. This neat little detail is found on all three models.

G-Shock GM-5640GEM Sunstone

Here’s the GM-5640GEM Sunstone, sporting the Casio Square look. I think that sunstone was a great choice of inspiration and it comes out very strongly in this watch. Its forged rainbow bezel shows off the multicoloured look of the gem, and the black ion plating gives the piece an authentic sunstone touch.

G-Shock has gone for a negative display on the dial which fits in with both case and strap well. Even with this darker display, there’s a lot of clarity in the digits, which is nice.

Interestingly, the Adventurers Gem Sunstone is equipped with a grey translucent strap. This smooth band has been purposely designed to contrast the textured case, which makes a cool effect!

Final Thoughts

So, those are the three signature models of G-Shocks 40th Anniversary Adventurers Gem set. Which one’s your favourite?

There's a lot to like about this release, and when it comes to G-Shock's metal watches range, there are few sets so colourful. If you're looking for a statement maker, look no further than Adventurers Gem. Plus, owning a watch that's part of the 40th Anniversary celebration of G-Shock is pretty special, too.
